Audacity is a terrific, multi-track, FREE audio recording software. Just Google for it. As to a microphone, unless you have a mixer, just get a USB mic for ~ or so and run directly into your PC.

I used to work at a studio based around Cubase and so purchased SX3 for myself so it was easier to transfer projects to and from the studio, however I recently put together my own home studio and recording rig and switched to Sonar 8 which I’ve found I much prefer to Cubase. On the other hand I have no experience with Cubase 4 or 5 (which are also supposed to be great) and so my opinion may be skewed by only ever using SX3.

Don’t bother with Pro Tools unless you can afford a proper HD rig. The LE stuff is just a rip-off and aimed at people who believe the hype about it being an ‘industry standard’ and think that running Pro Tools (albeit a crippled, cut-down version of it) will make them sound professional.

If you’re on a budget, take a look at Reaper…

Question by gushpuppy: How can I get rid of scratching sounds in recording equipment?

I.E. Recording equipment. Or synthesizers?

Answer by Michael D
simple answer buy better quality recording equipment.
it is hard to diagnose your problem from the limited amount of information you have given. the most probably suspect is internal noise, the cheaper the equipment the more internal noise it has,

one solution would to be to increase the input levels of the instruments you are trying to record. this (up to a point) will mask the internal noise of your recording equipment.
however too much input may result in over saturation or distortion. creating even more problems. of course if you are using an old tube type of amplifier some distortion may be a good thing.
OR you could try just the opposite and lower the input of the instrument and let the internal amplifier of your recording equipment handle the load. its going to be a lot of trial and error i’m afraid, since there are so many variables involved, but you have to find the weakest link and work around (or upgrade) that.

try varying the gain on your inputs and outputs, it can be a hit or miss kind of thing and it really depends on what type of equipment you have, what power levels you are working with and the various instruments you have. that’s why sound engineers get paid big bucks to make things sound perfect. very hard to do in a home studio.
another thing you need to be concerned with is your wiring and connections, make sure to use good quality wire, keep the wires separated as much as possible (to eliminate crosstalk between wires) and use good quality connectors, if you have the old type bare wire into the spring loaded or screw down clamp, twist the end of the wire tightly and apply some solder to it. this will prevent fraying and to some degree oxidation of the copper wire, giving a much better connection.
hope this improves your quality

Question by Rickey: How can I sync songs recorded on my Roland Fantom G to ProTools MPowered?

I have Pro Tools M Powered with an interface that I can connect my keyboard to. A song that I’ve recorded is 3 minutes long on the keyboard. I would like to copy the instrumental to Pro Tools so I can record vocals on ProTools to finish the track. My question is how can I make that transfer quickly.
Thanks much!

Plug the Fantom’s audio cables into your mbox… stereo… Set the input on the track you want to record on… click record and press play on the Fantom.

My friends created a rap group and wanted to be serious about it. I told them I would be their producer and we would record their music. I want to make a very cheap home studio. Is is possible that i could use only my computer, a microphone, and software to make my own music and edit it? Please note, that we are trying to spend a small amout of money.

Yeah but you need headphones too, of course. For software, I recommend buying MAGIX. Or you can download a free trial of Cool Edit.

What is a good video recording software?

Posted by admin On August - 27 - 20101 COMMENT

Question by Rawr: What is a good video recording software?

I recently purchased a Logitech C910 webcam so I can record Youtube videos, and the picture quality and video qualities are great. However, as soon as I switch the photo/video option on the Logitech video recording software to video, the frame-rate plummets to a measly .3 frames per second. Please recommend a good video recording/editing software I can use with the webcam, if it is helpful I’ll give you 10 points!
